Project Proposal

‘Exploring visual techniques to transform and enhance a theme’

Throughout my exploration I wish to investigate a variety of different visual techniques, centred upon one main theme, to reveal several new and interesting ways in which I can illustrate a particular subject matter.

Drawing upon my Final Major Project, my project will focus upon the same theme of ‘Unusual Animals’. I have chosen to continue concentrating on this theme as I have a particular keen interest in nature which has always inspired my illustrations. Therefore I believe this will help influence my practise and guide me towards unfamiliar techniques which I can use to enhance my work in the future.

I hope to expand my knowledge and understanding for visual techniques by deconstructing and identifying the ways in which other artists employ a range of different visual processes to aid the construction of their illustrations and what effects these techniques have overall.

By undertaking the following experiments which will explore:

- Colour
- Composition
- Perspective
- Metaphors
- Anthropomorphism

These experiments will be visually supplemented by primary sources which I aim to collect by visually recording my subject matter through observational drawings and first hand photographs which I will then use as a basis throughout my explorative illustrations.

Throughout these experiments I am to investigate and respond to the following objectives:

- To utilise visual techniques to enhance an illustration
- To create an image that differs to the realistic portrayal of the subject matter
- To focus on how different visual elements can be enhanced by combining them together

My communication objectives for my project are to engage, inform and educate the audience about an animal they may not have come across before, following my theme of unusual animals.

I then hope to use the results of my investigations to influence the final realisation of my ideas for my Final Major Project, bringing the different components of my experiments together and combining them in different ways to produce a more visually skilled outcome.

My overall aims for this project are to help improve my understanding in the different approaches and techniques I can employ to enhance my theme and how these can be applied in different ways. I wish to expand my development skills by creating a more diverse and dynamic approach to constructing my ideas. Therefore, strengthening my knowledge in the visual language, which I hope to then continue to draw upon throughout my Final Major Project and illustrative practise.
